Preparation for disasters
We, at the Red Cross, believe in preparation.
Here’s how we prepare:
- we support the self-help skills and resilience of local communities
- we are constantly developing our internal resources to respond to the most unexpected situations as quickly and efficiently as possible
Programs, trainings:
Public preparation programs
The spectre of our programs ranges from public forums, roadshows, to targeted community-based preparations (trainings, consultations). Participants will learn about the sources of danger in their area and how to prepare for a potential emergency. Public events are usually organised with the help of regional colleagues of Disaster Management.
Trainings for our volunteers and staff
In order for our organisation to be able to respond efficiently to various unexpected situations, it’s inevitable to prepare our volunteers and staff for unusual situations and for tasks that come with a lot of stress. Out of all the trainings provided for our volunteers, we should mention the first-aid course and the psychosocial assistance training, the knowledge of which is essential in any type of disaster. It is also important to be prepared for the tasks that we have to encounter in shelters, as well as for post-disaster relief and rehabilitation activities.
Complex Disaster Response exercise
In addition to our trainings, we have been organizing our Complex Disaster Response exercise since 2013, during which a staff of nearly 200 volunteers and co-workers carry out various activities within our scope of tasks. Our practice is international, with the regular participation of foreign sister companies (Red Cross organizations in other countries). In addition to the combined exercises, our organization participates in 15-20 different disaster response exercises each year at the invitation of our associates.
